Menstruation in Ayurveda: How to Nourish Your Body, Calm Vata & Honor Your Creative Power

Every single person born with a womb moves through an initiation every month.

And yet - we are expected to carry on as if nothing is happening.

And emotionally? It can feel like meeting a different version of yourself every week.

Predictable and grounded.

Raging and untamed.

Deeply reflective and tearful.

Wildly creative and alive.

Sometimes we don’t even know who we are going to be LOL

Ayurveda does.

The Menstrual Phase & Vata Dosha

In Ayurveda, the menstrual phase (the bleed) is governed primarily by Vata dosha - the energy of air and ether.

Vata is movement. Vata is change. Vata is subtle. Vata is creative life force.

The downward movement of menstrual blood is governed by Apana Vayu, the subdosha of Vata responsible for elimination and downward flow.

Menstruation is not just a “period.” It is a clearing. A release. A monthly shedding. And actually it's a gift to have it. Could this be the reason why women live longer than men? because we get the gift of purging every month?

Anyway, because Vata naturally increases during this time (bleed phase), we must be mindful not to aggravate it further.

When Vata becomes disturbed, it can show up as:

  • Cramping and spasms

  • Anxiety or racing thoughts

  • Bloating and gas

  • Irregular cycles

  • Emotional volatility

  • Feeling ungrounded or scattered

This is why menstruation is not the time to push, over-schedule, or override your body.

It is the time to soften. to lean into pause, reflection and creativity.

Here’s the beautiful part:

Vata is also the seat of creativity.

It governs imagination, intuition, inspiration, dreaming, subtle perception and many women feel more intuitive, more inward, more reflective during their bleed. Some feel a rush of insight. Others feel the deep need to withdraw. If you don't feel this, then see what happens when you make way for this to arise within you

Your body is shedding the old lining of your womb so energetically your psyche is shedding what no longer serves.

This is a powerful portal for:

  • Journaling

  • Meditating

  • Daydreaming

  • Visioning

  • Receiving creative insight

  • Listening deeply

The key is to slow down enough to catch the wisdom.

How to Eat During Your Bleed (According to Ayurveda)

During menstruation, digestion (Agni) can be slightly lowered. The body is directing energy toward cleansing and downward movement.

So we simplify.

Food during your bleed should be:

  • Light

  • Warm

  • Easy to digest

  • Simple

  • Moderately spiced

  • Eaten in smaller quantities

Think:

  • Moong dal

  • Red lentils

  • Soft rice

  • Warm stews

  • Cooked vegetables

  • A little ghee

  • Gentle digestive spices like dry ginger, cardamom, rock salt, and a pinch of hing

Avoid:

  • Cold foods

  • Raw salads

  • Excess caffeine

  • Very heavy, greasy meals

  • Overeating

  • Ice-cold drinks

Warmth is medicine for Vata.

Regular meals are medicine for Vata.

Gentleness is medicine for Vata.
