This christmas I was gifted a Yeast Infection. I could be all embarrassed and shy about it, but the truth is about 3.5 million people go to see a doctor due to Candida Albicans, and over 75% of women will expereince one in there lifetime. Only about 1 in 4 of us have Candida living in our digestive system at one time, and usually this is fine and does not cause any problems, however as you'll read below, the candida is opportunistic and will find ways to take over and make you itch like you're wearing an Alpaca jumpsuit.

Understanding Yeast Infections
Yeast infections happen when the fungus Candida grows out of control, often in warm, moist areas like the vaginal canal or mouth. Factors like antibiotics, high sugar diets, hormonal changes, stress, anitbiotics, or weakened immune systems can trigger this overgrowth. Symptoms usually include itching, redness, swelling, and sometimes a thick discharge.
Knowing what causes the imbalance helps in choosing the right natural remedies. The goal is to reduce fungal growth while supporting the body's natural defenses.
This is the protocol I used to heal myself naturally.
1. Probiotics to Restore Balance
Probiotics are friendly bacteria that help keep yeast in check. Taking probiotic supplements or eating probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, and sauerkraut can support your microbiome. Studies suggest that probiotics may reduce the risk of recurrent yeast infections by restoring healthy bacteria levels.
Tip: Look for probiotics containing Lactobacillus strains, which are especially helpful for vaginal health.
2. Sauerkraut
Sauerkraut is a naturally fermented food rich in beneficial bacteria. Regularly eating small amounts of unpasteurized sauerkraut can help support gut health, immune function, and microbial balance — all of which influence yeast levels in the body.
Tip: Choose sauerkraut from the refrigerated section with no added sugar.
3. Suppositories
I used Vitanic Yeast Arrest homeopathic ones from Natural Grocers, and they really helped soothe and calm the itching.
4. Garlic as a Natural Antimicrobial
Garlic contains allicin, a compound with antifungal properties. Eating raw garlic or taking garlic supplements may help fight yeast infections from the inside out. I chose odorized capsules (but my husband said my breath still smelled of garlic lol)
5. Pau' d'arco
Pau d’Arco is an herbal tea traditionally used for its antifungal and immune-supportive properties. I however bought a tincture and took it twice a day as directed.
Note: Not recommended during pregnancy or for long-term use without guidance.
6. Oregon Grape
Oregon grape root contains berberine, a compound known for its antifungal and antimicrobial effects. It’s often used to support gut, liver, and immune health - key systems involved in maintaining microbial balance.
Again I used a tincture and took twice a day as directed.
7. Bulgarian Yoghurt
Bulgarian yogurt is especially rich in live Lactobacillus cultures. Eating plain, unsweetened yogurt may help replenish beneficial bacteria and support a healthy microbiome.
I used the White Mountain brand, it contains up to 90 billion live bacteria per servings which is a LOT. I would take mouthfuls through the day and even mix in some cinnamon to make it a bit naturally sweet. It's VERY tart.
8. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is said to be anti-fungral and microbial - so I would use this (and sometimes the yoghurt) to gently rub on the area before washing my hands and it was so soothing and cooling.
9. Enzymes
Digestive enzymes support proper breakdown of food, helping reduce undigested sugars that yeast can feed on. Some enzymes may also assist in breaking down yeast biofilms, making balance easier to restore. such as Protease. Now talking about Biofilms is a whooooole other thing that is a very important read. They say that taking over 150,000 protease is whats needed to break down a biofilm. I couldnt find this in store so I took 2 capsules of 60,000
10. Cut out sugar
Yep - Sugar feeds yeast. Bread, sweet fruits, starch, lactose etc.... Now i didn't cut it all out completely but I would be too miserable. But significantly cut back on my bread and only ate natural sourdough (which is way better than normal bread), stopped drinking milk and switch it for flax milk - which is delicious and full of omegas, and cut out sugar completly.
Lifestyle Changes to Support Healing
Natural remedies work best when combined with lifestyle adjustments that reduce yeast-friendly conditions.
Wear breathable clothing: Choose cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothes to keep the area dry. You can dry on cool with a hairdryer after a shower (sounds gross but it needs to be DRY)
Practice good hygiene: Keep the affected area clean and dry, but avoid harsh soaps or douches that disrupt natural flora.
Manage stress: Stress weakens the immune system, so find ways to relax and recharge.

When to See a Doctor
Natural remedies can be effective for mild yeast infections, but they are not a substitute for professional medical advice. If symptoms persist for more than a week, worsen, or recur frequently, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider. Some infections require prescription antifungal medications to fully clear.
